Music has always played a role in my life. And, it continues to play a major role in my life as I have much to do with the music in our church; as well as playing piano and guitar and writing songs for my own enjoyment.
I cannot say, however, that I have always enjoyed that role. I was in kindergarten when I was asked by my parents if I would like to learn a musical instrument. (I think it was more of the fact that they wanted me to learn a musical instrument, but they wanted to know which one I would prefer trying out) Well, the piano was chosen. That choice began a long hall of 12 years of piano lessons, many recitals, and a lot of hours of hated practice.
I was an athletic boy, and I had other loves in my life. I hated to take the half hour out of my basketball or hunting time to practice piano. However, I had a mother who would not give in. She would not allow me to quit. She said "I have had too many people tell me they wish they would have stuck with it to let you quit." So, I was stuck with the piano.
Today, I can play for church, and I can play some special music, but Oh! What the Lord could be doing through me if I would have only tried to get better. I must say my mother was right. If I would have quit, I would be saying what so many others say and have said: "I wish I would have stuck with it."
Now, I absolutely love to play. And I am thankful that she did not give up on making me take lessons.
When I went to college, I tried to get into piano lessons, however, that was not able to happen. I have always loved to sing, and so I was able to take voice lessons for a year and a half or so.
Also, it was in college that I picked up the guitar. Another friend of mine and I would practice together. We started out with the basic chords and wow--WHAT AN AWFUL SOUND!!!! It's a wonder anyone could be found hanging out on our hall with that nonsense.
